In another article I counted down the sports with the best and worst video games. It dawned upon me that there have been sports movies even longer than there have been sports video games. That is why I decided to compile this list of sports that have produced the best movies.
There are two things to consider here. Number one is simply which sports have produced the best movies. But the second consideration will be the ratio of good movies to bad movies. If two sports have about the same amount of good movies then the sport that will come out on top is the one that has less bad movies.
24. Basketball
Sorry basketball fans but basketball is the worse. I know, I know, Hoosiers is a great movie. I think it’s the all-time best sports movie, although that is mainly because I realize that basketball movies suck so it amazes me that Hoosiers is so good. Think about the second best basketball movie and how big a drop off it is. Personally I think the second best basketball movie is Teen Wolf and that is pretty sad. The other basketball movies are a list of disastrous movies: Blue Chips, Eddie, He Got Game, Love and Basketball, Basketball Diaries, Semi-Pro, Space Jam, White Men Can’t Jump, Be Like Mike.
23. Ping Pong
Balls of Fury. Do I need to say anymore?
22. Ice Skating
If I had the ability to wipe away any one sports movie from brain it would probably be Blades of Glory. There are some other craptacularly cheesy movies like Ice Princess too.
21. Swimming
If I had a choice between Swimfan, Pride and death I would choose death.
20. Bowling
I did not like Kingpin. I’d rather watch actual bowling and wouldn’t watch actual bowling if it was on all 752 channels.
19. Surfing
Umm…well, Blue Crush at least had some hot chicks in it.
18. Volleyball
I’ll put Volleyball slightly ahead of Surfing only because Sideout was slightly better than Blue Crush, though neither was good.
17. Horse Racing
When is Tobey Maguire going to put his Spidey costume on and who is this Seabiscuit villain? Never heard of him.
16. Pro Wrestling
Ready to Rumble at least had some unintentionally funny moments and Nacho Libre also had a few funny moments.
15. Track & Field
Chariots of Fire is supposed to be a classic but I wasn’t that impressed. That song is cool though. I just wish I could run in slow motion.
14. Bobsledding
I always liked Malik Yoba in Cool Runnings. Whatever happened to him?
13. Tennis
I liked Kirsten Dunst in Wimbledon and I like Paul Bettany but for some reason it didn’t click and was just alright. I don’t know, maybe it had to do with the fact that he’s like 40 and she’s like 20.
12. Golf
Caddyshack is funny but that is about it as far as the golf movies go. No, I don’t think that Adam Sandler punching a game show host is funny enough to make an entire movie good and Tin Cup was just boring.
11. Cheerleading
I’m ashamed to say that I have seen not one, not two, but three of the Bring It On movies. I am even more shamed to say that I liked two of them.
10. Soccer
Soccer is a tough one because I don’t have many soccer movies to go on. I think soccer gets this high up the list thanks to Bend it Like Beckham but after that there isn’t much to see here.
9. Arm Wrestling
As far as I know there is only one arm wrestling movie and that is the awesomeness that is Over the Top!
8. Karate
I struggled on Karate. Should I use every movie that has some kind of martial arts contest? Like Mortal Kombat, Best of the Best, etc? In the end I decided to with strictly karate competition movies which was mostly just the Karate Kid movies.
7. Auto Racing
When I searched for racing movies I got a lot of Fast and the Furious results but I’m not counting street racing. Still Auto Racing isn’t bad. I’m one of the few people that doesn’t like Will Ferrell therefore Talladega Nights is a strike against racing but Speed Racer was alright. Cars and ESPN’s 3 the Dale Earnhardt Story are good movies and I’ve always enjoyed the Herbie movies as well.
6. Dodgeball
Like arm wrestling dodgeball movies are one for one thanks to Ben Stiller’s Dodgeball movie.
5. Gymnastics
I’ve only got one movie to go on with Gymnastics but Stick It surprised the heck out of me. I’d probably say it’s a top 15 sports movie and I never would have imagined that.
4. Ice Hockey
Ice Hockey hasn’t had a lot of movies but I think the good to bad ratio is pretty good. The first Mighty Ducks movie was good in my opinion (keep in mind that it was a movie directed towards kids and I was a kid at the time.) Mystery, Alaska was a very good movie and then of course there is Slap Shots. Miracle was also alright, but they should have realized there was no possible way they were going to recreate one of the best moments in sports history.
3. Football
Choosing between football and baseball was tough. I think Football’s top three of Brian’s Song, Friday Night Lights and Remember the Titans are better than baseball, but I don’t like the rest as much. I thought that the Game Plan was cute, We Are Marshall was good and the Brian’s Song remake was not bad. After that there are some pretty lousy movies including Varsity Blues, Any Given Sunday, the Replacements and the Longest Yard remake. Seriously? James Vanderbeek, Jamie Foxx, Keanu Reeves and Adam Sandler? You’re going to try and pass them off as quarterbacks? Please.
2. Baseball
Everyone immediately thinks of Kevin Costner when it comes to baseball and Field of Dreams and Bull Durham are definitely big feathers in the baseball movie cap, but For the Love of the Game is definitely a negative. I actually prefer Major League over Slap Shot or Caddyshack so that is a big plus for baseball. Bad News Bears is a classic, Sandlot is a solid movie, Eight Men Out and the Natural are both really good and 51* is also good. Baseball’s bad movies stop them from gaining the number one spot. I don’t think baseball’s bad movies are as bad as football though because most of baseball’s bad movies are just cheesy Disney movies, not just poorly made movies. Rookie of the Year, Angels in the Outfield, The Scout, Major League II, Summer Catch and the Bad News Bears remake were all pretty bad.
1. Boxing
Boxing is the cream of the crop when it comes to the sport that produces the best movies. I’ll take the top three boxing moves, Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby and Rocky over any other threesome. The boxing movies go even deeper than that though. Cinderella Man is a pretty solid number four, followed by Ali and the Hurricane, which all got Oscar nominations. There was also a very good independent movie called Girlfight starring Michelle Rodriguez and the Rocky sequels. The top it all off the number of bad boxing movies aren’t anywhere close to basketball, baseball or football.
