Black Sofa

I have a curse. I call it the "white walls curse". I’m a renter because I am a bit scared of the prospect of a thirty-year mortgage at this point in my life. I sometimes cannot decide which country I want to live in let alone choose a house.  I’ve noticed a trend in each place that I rent; the walls are usually stark white. The landlords always have the exact same thing to say about said walls, "White brightens up the place don’t you think?"

White does add an undeniable brightness to any room but too much white is hard on the eyes. It can also make smaller spaces seem larger. I suspect this is part of the reason for the love affair many landlords have with the color white. If it were my own home I’d be out buying cans and cans of colors right now but being the renter that I am, I can’t. I have to be creative and find ways to add color to my place without painting or wallpapering. Some landlords will let you paint but they will most likely want to approve the color. They usually end up suggesting "off white". If this happens to you there are many easy ways to add some color to your life.

How To Choose Colors

Before you go on a buying spree, choose the colors you would like to surround yourself with first. Imagine the effect a color will have on your mood before you make your final choice. A light green color will add a calm feeling to any space. Yellow will add a feeling of sunshine and brightness without the glare of stark white. Darker colors like burgundy or blue will add a touch of class depending on what you choose to go with them.

A good idea is to pick one thing about your room that you love whether it is a painting, a portrait or almost anything else you will have displayed. Study this item and pick out a few colors you see in it and go with those. You can pick colors from the fabric on your furniture or choose ones that compliment them. If you are starting from scratch go ahead and pick a few colors you love. If you feel you are really dense about colors like I am, look through magazines for ads that feature nicely decorated rooms and homes. Choose a color scheme you like from one of these.

Wallpaper borders can add a splash of color along the top of your wall or half way down if you choose. Be sure to ask permission before you do this. As with painting, your landlord might see this as "too permanent" and ask you not to do it. If your landlord gives you the go ahead to apply the border choose one you find appealing and buy room accessories that match the colors in the border.

Curtains

Curtains are definitely a great way to spice up any room. Sheer panels will let in the sunlight while adding color or you can go with heavier fabric that blocks out light entirely. A thicker fabric is a great idea for your bedroom if you aren’t an early riser. If you can’t find anything that you really love you can make them yourself. Go to a craft or fabric store and pick out a fabric and make the curtains yourself. Curtains require just a few straight stitches so even the novice crafter can make them with relative ease. If you like a cleaner look you can opt for mini blinds. These come in many great colors and a wide range of sizes to fit just about any window.

Wall Hangings

Be sure to find out if your landlord allows you to put nails in the wall. If not you may have a hard time hanging art but there are ways around this. You can rest a painting against the wall, on a mantel or even on an end table. You can also buy an inexpensive easel, rest the painting on it and put it in the corner. You can also use bookcases to display objects in your room. If you really want to hang art have a look around your local home improvement store for some ideas on how to hang items with minimal wall damage. The 3M Company has wall hooks that attach to the wall using an adhesive that can be removed with no damage to the wall. The large size hook holds up to 7.5 pounds.

If you can’t afford art, go with a poster print of a painting you like and frame it. You could also buy a canvas and create something in the colors you have chosen for your room. You don’t have to be an artist to create something appealing to hang on your wall.

Rugs

If you are feeling really generous you could have new carpeting installed. You must of course get permission for this from your landlord. If you decide to do this remember that when you move out the carpeting must stay. If you plan to stay in the rental for a long time this might be a good investment for you. If this is out of the question for you, you might consider purchasing area rugs. You can put these just about anywhere. Be sure to use something that secures them in place if they are lightweight. Many come with a rubber-like backing on them that grips the floor so you won’t slide when you step on them.

Throw Pillows and Blankets

These can be found in just about any color and texture. Buy them in the color of your choice and use them on your sofa and chairs. You can also throw some of these on your bed. Along the same lines you can buy sofa and chair covers to liven up older furniture. These can be bought in many colors or patterns as well.

Plants

A great plant looks good in any room. You can add as many or as few as you like. Keep in mind you will have to water these plants as you make your purchases. I tend to neglect my plants so I only have a few of the tougher variety in my place. You can choose a big palm or fern to sit in the corner or smaller ones to distribute around the room. Be careful about buying fake plants, as these can look cheap. If you wish to buy plastic spend a little more for ones that are realistic looking.

Finishing Touches

You may have the best luck wandering around the home department of your favorite store. If you see something you love go ahead and buy it. Dollar and discount stores can be surprising places to find unique items that will look great in your place and give it that personal touch that makes any rental feel like home.

The most important and necessary thing which every living room contains is sofa sets. However, if someone is thinking that selecting perfect sofa set for his/her living room is an easy task, then they should learn that this is not the case. Buying a sofa set is indeed an uphill task and there are a lot of factors to consider before buying the sofa set in order to go for the right choice.

You have to finalize the size of the sofa which depends upon the size of your living room. Take measurements of your room which will greatly help you in selecting appropriate sofa set. Additionally, if the sofa set is for the upper floor then you must take the measurement of the stairs as well.

Another considerable thing is the décor of your home; match the selected sofa with it else you will not find your selection perfect. For instance, if your existing living room furniture is of modern style then you will have to select the sofa according to its overall ambiance. Some people normally made a mistake of selecting living room sofas with latest colors and afterwards regret on their decision.

If lime green is loved by the person today; that does not mean that it will be as loveable by the people after few years. So try to select the sofa set that people will admire now and after. This statement is valid if you do not require seasonal furniture change else you can select such sofa sets. I am not actually saying to make a simple selection; go for the modern one but stick to the sober rules. Select the sofa set which really matches the colors of room and with fills the area perfectly. Normally, the sofa sets having natural color are the best and remain alive 'Style wise' for long. If you want to provide new hot and latest look to your house with the help of sofas, you can try dressing them with cushions with latest print.

Whiten up your thoughts before choosing the fabric of your living room sofa set. Mostly people place their sofa set in their living room and use it very often. For any type of gathering, they are going to be used extensively. And if you have some kids, then you know very well that you have to treat them perpetually. However, you will not find white stain sofa selection wise in some cases. The maintenance of such sofa sets is very difficult and they loss their freshness before the expected time. If your requirement is sectional living room sofas that are going to be used only on formal occasions then it is suggested to get some best quality fabric for your sofa set. Get practical for you know your sofa set is going to be used informal.

With all the above mentioned features do not forget about the basic feature which every sofa set must have: "The Comfort". Try to make your sofa selection which can provide extreme level of comfort to its users. Try to add the properties which normal users require in this price of furniture like some people love to sit on pillowed sofa because they are very comfortable. Other notable things which certainly effect the level of comfort are angle at which the back of a person is kept and the depth of sofa seat. Some people like living room sofas that have firm seats and other may like the seat to be pushed down on every sitting. So this is a little story about a thing which is a part of every house and hope you will like this effort and will try to remember all the above discussed things.

Maybe you’re trying to sell your home. Maybe you just bought a new home and the interior hasn’t been updated since the ’70s. Or maybe you’re just plain ready for a change.

When money is tight, the last thing you want to do is go out and spend a ton of money to remodel your home. If you use a little creativity, you’ll be able to stick to your budget yet give your home a whole new look.

First, make a list of what you’d like to change. Take a good look at whichever room you choose to tackle first. Consider the furniture, the walls, the flooring and even the ceiling. Take a look at the color scheme. Check out fixtures, like lights and fans, and window coverings.

Then, think about how you want the room to look and feel. Think of things you can change, add to or subtract from the room to make the transformation. Head down to your local home improvement store and take a look at what they offer, and make sure the items you want will fit into your budget.

Here are some examples of what you can change in different rooms of your home.

The Foyer
Paint. This is the most drastic change you can make here. Since this is the first "room" a guest sees when they enter your home, you want it to reflect the style of your home and make your guest feel comfortable. Consider hanging a picture in a prominent place, or setting up a small table or pedestal and placing a vase of fresh flowers on it.

Dining Room
This is the room where families come together and share stories over meals. You want this room to feel comfortable. Again, painting is an inexpensive way to change the look of this room, but you can also add chair rail or crown molding and paint it a complementary color. Careful, though: these things can get expensive; perhaps these options are best if you have a smaller dining room. You can replace a gaudy chandelier with attractive, indirect light, like recessed lighting or carefully aimed track lighting.

Living Room
Sometimes referred to as a sitting room, this is a room without a TV, where homeowners can relax and read a book or listen to music. Buying comfortable furniture is a good idea; consider buying a gently used sofa from a second-hand shop and putting a nice slipcover over it. If you’re fortunate enough to have a fireplace, adding a screen or some other type of hearth decor can dress it up a bit. Lighting is key here–you don’t want harsh overhead lights glaring down at you and your guests. You can buy an inexpensive floor lamp or install recessed lighting in this room. Buy a ceiling fan to provide light and add to the look of the room.

Family Room/TV Room
This room must be functional, so the position of furniture is key. Move the TV to a different area of the room, then arrange the sofa and loveseat in view of it. Place your coffee and end tables in reach of the couch. If you have other furniture, like DVD shelves, place them strategically as well. If there’s really no other way to arrange your furniture, consider adding a decorative rug or hanging new pictures on the walls. Chair rail also looks great in this room.

Bathroom
The least expensive options here include replacing your toilet seat (or the whole unit), replacing your sink fixtures and changing the shower curtain. Shop around for the sink fixtures, if you want to go this route, and choose wisely, since upscale brands tend to be quite costly. You can also buy new towels and a new bath mat to freshen up the room.

Hallway
The hallway is a great place for faux finishing a wall or two. This involves using a special roller or rag to paint a texture or pattern onto a wall. You can also hand-paint it to create your own look. The only extra costs associated with faux painting are for the brushes, trowels or rollers you choose.

Master Bedroom
You have a lot of options here. Take advantage of furniture sales to buy yourself a new bedroom set. Alternatively, look for just one additional piece of furniture to use as an accent, like a mirror or headboard and footboard set. Again, rearranging the room works well. Picking out a new bedspread and new curtains can really brighten up the room (or darken it, if that’s what you’re going for).

Guest Bedroom
If you host guests frequently, you may get sick of seeing the same thing every time you clean the room. Replacing the comforter and curtains is an easy change to make.

Kids’ Rooms
Children have ever-changing desires, so what they want one day could be the opposite of what they want the next. Try to make changes they’ll appreciate over the next few years, instead of something trendy that they’ll hate in a month. Stick with painting and changing the pictures on the walls until they’re old enough to make decisions and stick with them.

Kitchen
The most remodeled room in the house doesn’t necessarily need to be remodeled. Changing light and sink fixtures as well as rearranging your counter space can drastically change the appearance and function of your kitchen. Consider putting in a ceramic tile floor if you currently have linoleum to update the style.

Ideas That Work in Any Room
You can replace beige sockets, switches and switchplates with white ones for a clean, modern look. Remove any old wallpaper; paint to freshen up a room or give it a whole new look. Scrape popcorn from older ceilings and apply an orange peel texture to it; this gets rid of that ’70s look. Buy faux wood blinds for your windows; these come in white as well as an attractive wood look. Replace old aluminum air registers and intakes with white or wood ones.

Whether you're with the family, hosting a gathering, or relaxing by yourself, you want your living room to look and feel its best. It should be so comfortable you won't want to leave, and stylish enough so that folks will ask to be there.

Also called family rooms, furniture rooms, and great rooms, the opportunities to update your living room are virtually limitless, whether it's just an item or two or it's a complete room makeover.

Furniture

In many ways, a living room is defined by its furniture—what's available, where it's placed, and how many people can sit comfortably. You can go casual or proper, large or small, depending on your needs. For instance, sofas are extremely versatile. Choose formal with a leather sofa or informal with a reclining sofa. Traditional sofas are still some of the most popular pieces of living room furniture, and sectional sofas are extremely prevalent with families. Sleeper sofas are also versatile since they can easily be converted into a guest bed.

If your living room décor calls for something smaller, a love seat or chair is an ideal addition. If you're looking for something more decorative, bench can include a compartment for storage. Ottomans let you put your feet up after a long day and can complement sofas, love seats, and chairs.

Entertainment plays a significant role in our home and our lives. Entertainment centers hold our TVs and stereo equipment, while media racks store all of our audio and visual stimulants. Want your TV and audio equipment separate? No problem. TV stands and audio stands can do that. Cabinets are excellent living room décor ideas to hold dishes and silverware, books and photos, and wine glasses and your favorite bottle of vino.

Tables can serve all sorts of purposes in living room décor. Coffee tables and end tables are the most common types, while sofa tables can stage accent pieces.

Accent pieces

After you're finished with the largest pieces to your living room remodel, take some time to think about the smallest. Accent pieces can also be considered living room accessories. From decorative bowls and candle holders for a table, to art and mirrors for the walls, to coat racks and magazine racks for the floor, accent pieces can help transform a bland living room into a place of elegance and conversation. And fireplace screens and wood racks double as functional art, protecting as they decorate. Finally, accent tables can be a place for picture frames or stand alone.

Two other areas of living room remodeling to think about are Lighting and Heating and Cooling.

Until next time, Happy Home Improving!

Some items that can freshen up a dreary looking living room are listed below. They can be had for under $20 a piece. Check out websites at the bottom under sources on where to purchase.

Paint

A new can of paint at Wal-Mart can be bought for fewer than 13 dollars. Fresh paint covers up scratches, stain and provides a new room smell that can be pleasing to the nasal. Open up a dark room by painting a lighter blue. Paints are lead free, latex and are safe to use. All you need is one to two cans for a 17 by 14 foot room.

Curtains

There are usually two to three windows in a living room in a small home. The various sizes, style, and colors of drapes or curtains can offer a down to earth or dramatic look to a room. Matt solid colored curtains simplify a room, while a dazzling detailed fabric of gold threads illuminates a room. Curtain prices vary but affordable ones can be found at your local Wal-Mart or Target store within your budget. Make your own by simply sewing one edge to make a loop for curtain rods to pass through. Fabric shower curtains are another idea.

Art

Art makes a statement. It is said a picture is worth a thousand words. Target, Marshall’s or TJ Maxx has many unique arts that suit your taste that are within your budget. Choose a piece that is appropriate for the theme, color, or design of your living room. You may also make your own by cutting pictures out of a magazine and frame them.

Furniture

A new entertainment center perhaps? Check out Craigslist or Freecycle sites for free furniture or other items. You can also post an ad of what you’re looking for. These sites are great because they are free to register and post.

Sofa Cover

For a dollar to two dollars a yard, you should be to find the right fabric big enough to cover your sofa or love seat. Stitch up or clean the edges to keep them from fraying and then cover and tug in the fabric.

Wallpaper

Discounted wallpaper is another great choice if you choose this method of upgrading your living room. Choose easy pattern to avoid having to perfectly match seams. Department stores or furniture store has affordable discontinue wallpaper in various designs. Ebay is a great site for wallpaper hunting.

I teach Research Methods at a university, and I find that students are often confused by two different developmental methods: longitudinal and cross-sectional designs. However, a few simple explanations can help students to dinstinguish between the two. Here goes:

In cross-sectional designs, there are at least two groups involved, but there is only one time point. Let’s say I want to see if ten-year-olds are more friendly than fifteen-year-olds. In a cross-sectional design, I have a group of ten-year-olds and a group of fifteen-year-olds. I test their levels of friendliness at one point in time, and I compare the results to see who is more friendly.

Simple enough, right? But there’s a significant disadvantage here; I don’t know if people become more or less friendly over time, or if there is something in the history of each cohort that has made it more or less friendly. For example, older people are more frugal than younger people. Do people become more frugal as they age? Probably not. Most likely older people are more frugal because of the era they grew up in, not because age makes us more frugal. However, a cross-sectional study cannot distingish what we call cohort effects and age related changes. This is the MAJOR weakness of cross-sectional research. (Remember that–it will probably be on your test, especially if you are in my class!)

A longitudinal study involves one group of people and at least two time points. If I compare ten-year-olds and fifteen-year-olds on friendliness in a longitudinal study, I would take a group of ten-year-olds and test their loneliness. Then I would wait five years and test them again when they are fifteen. This is a longitudinal study because I’m only looking at one group of people, but I am looking at them at more the one time point. If I find that fifteen-year-olds are more friendly, I know that the group has become more friendly as they aged. I can say that this is an age related change rather than a cohort effect.

In many ways, a longitudinal study is superior to a cross-sectional study. However, cross-sectional studies are quite common. Why? With a cross-sectional study, you have results right away. You can finish that thesis or publish that article. Because cross-sectional only involves one data collection point, it’s also cheaper. You also save money by not having to track people across time.

A cross-sectional study also minimizes attrition. In longitudinal studies, people may drop out across time. If you test people at five year intervals, it’s likely your sample will get smaller every five years. People may die, move, or simply not want to participate any longer.

In summary, remember that cross-sectional designs involve two or more groups of people at one time point. Longitudinal designs involve one group of people at more than one time point. If you can keep this in mind, you are well on your way to understanding the differences between these two developmental designs.
